Types of Submissions
The Journal of Biological Insights (JBI) welcomes original, high-quality manuscripts in diverse areas of biological sciences, including but not limited to: Molecular Biology, Genomics and Epigenetics, Plant Sciences, Environmental Biology, Neurobiology, Microbiology and Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioinformatics, and Bionanotechnology. The journal encourages interdisciplinary approaches and accepts a variety of manuscript types:
Original Research Articles: Full-length papers reporting novel experimental or observational findings in any field of biological sciences. Manuscripts should not exceed 5000 words (excluding abstract, references, and tables/figures), corresponding to a maximum of 15 printed pages. A reference limit of 45 is recommended.
Review Articles: Comprehensive, critical assessments of current knowledge on topics of broad interest to the scientific community. Reviews should not exceed 6000 words, excluding a brief abstract and up to 5 figures or tables. The number of references should not exceed 100.
Short Communications: Brief reports of significant findings requiring urgent dissemination. Word count should not exceed 2000 words, with a maximum of 2 tables or figures, and up to 20 references.
Correspondence and Letters to the Editor: Short, focused discussions or critiques of recently published articles or noteworthy observations. Limited to 400 words, 1 figure or table, and a maximum of 10 references. Original data is not required.
Case Reports: Well-documented cases that highlight novel biological or clinical phenomena with potential diagnostic or therapeutic implications. Maximum 1500 words, 1 figure or table, and up to 15 references.
Editorials: Invited commentary authored by editorial board members or distinguished scholars on current scientific trends or policy issues.
Manuscript Preparation
Cover Letter
All manuscript submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter signed by the corresponding author on behalf of all co-authors. The letter should disclose any sources of funding and potential conflicts of interest. It must also include signed declarations for prior publication certification, copyright transfer, and conflict of interest disclosure.
Title Page
The title page should include a concise and informative title (not exceeding two printed lines), full names of all authors, their institutional affiliations (including department, university/institute, city, and country), up to two academic credentials for each author, and the name and email address of the corresponding author.
Abstract
The abstract should be a single structured paragraph of no more than 250 words and must include four clearly defined parts: the Objective (stating the purpose of the study), Methods (summarizing the study design, key methods, and participants), Results (highlighting the main findings), and Conclusion (briefly interpreting the results and their significance). Do not include any references or citations. Add 3 to 5 relevant keywords to support indexing.
Main Text
The main text should be organized into clearly defined sections, each beginning on a new page: Introduction, Materials and Methods (including names of vendors, cities, countries, and details of any statistical software used), Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Conflict of Interest Statement, Funding Disclosure, and Ethical Approval (if applicable). Use Palatino Linotype, font size 11-point, with 1.25 line spacing throughout the manuscript.
References
- References should be listed in the order cited in the text using Arabic numerals in square brackets, e.g., [1], [2,3].
- Follow the Vancouver (AMA) referencing style.
- Examples:
Journal Article:
Smith JA, Lee RT. Regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes. J Mol Biol. 2020;432(10):3001–12. doi:10.1016/j.jmb.2020.04.007
Book:
Alberts B, Johnson A, Lewis J, et al. Molecular Biology of the Cell. 6th ed. Garland Science; 2015.
Tables, Figures, and Illustrations
All figures and tables must be cited in the text, and each should include a clear legend. Table titles should appear above the tables, while figure legends should be placed below the figures. Submit all figures in color with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi in JPEG or TIFF format. Bar graphs must be color-coded and clearly labeled. Microscopy images should include magnification bars and scale, and before-and-after images must be visually consistent in size, position, and lighting.
Reprints and Forms
Authors may request up to five complimentary reprints of their published article. Along with the manuscript, authors must submit a signed Author Release Form, Prior Publication Certification, Copyright Transfer, Conflict of Interest Disclosure, and ORCID ID for each author.
Post-Acceptance Process
After acceptance, the manuscript will be typeset and formatted. The corresponding author will be asked to confirm the author names, their order, and affiliations. A final proof will be provided for review, but major changes to content or authorship will not be allowed. Copyright will be transferred to the Scientific Publishing Center, King Abdulaziz University. Any changes after publication can only be made through an official erratum approved by the Editor-in-Chief.
