The Noble Qur’ân’s Approach in Promoting Social Responsibility―Sûrat An-Nisā’ as a Model

Abstract

Research objectives

This study aims to clarify the concept of social responsibility as stated in the Noble Qur’ân, and to explain the Noble Qur’ân’s approach in promoting social responsibility by clarifying the role of the individual towards society and the role of society towards its individuals. The study relied on Sûrat An-Nisā’ as a model.

Methodology

The study adopts three different approaches. First, it uses the inductive approach to analyze and trace the verses of Sûrat An-Nisā’, including the rulings related to Muslim society. Second, it uses the analytical approach to survey and analyze these verses in the books of exegesis. Finally, it uses the deductive approach to derive the implications that indicate not only the concept of social responsibility but also the mechanisms for instilling it into the members of society.

Findings

The Noble Qur’ân cares much about the principle of social responsibility and its affirmation through a myriad of rights and duties that Allah imposed on His creatures.

Sûrat An-Nisā’ concerns for constructing Muslim society and establishing it on justice.

The Muslim individual must live in society, showing the spirit of responsibility, knowing his duties and evaluating them, thus preserving the society’s stability and security. The society's responsibility towards its members is to establish justice, preserve rights, apply the penalties as ordained by Islamic law, and achieve social solidarity. Social responsibility not only strengthens the ties between community members, but also creates a strong and cohesive society that is protected from disintegration and collapse.

Originality

The significance of this research is not just limited to highlighting the Noble Qur'ân's perspective on promoting social responsibility but also to elucidating the responsibility and contribution of individuals towards society, as well as the responsibility and role of society towards its members.
