Abstract

The science of mathematical measurement, which is known as metrology, is defined as estimation of a material or intangible thing by using a specific unit to identify the number of contents of this unit. It is originally used in the natural and mathematical sciences, also it has different types depending on its subject matter, as well as it is concerned with the amounts of length, width, height, weight, time, capacity, movement, and is interested in reading abstract concepts and arithmetic conventions that indicate the quantity of the countable and its amount that can be increased and decreased according to its considered mathematical data, meaning the completion of equations by transforming them into specific graphical measurements that are extracted by using the approved mathematical proofs.

This science has been created in response to and fulfilling religious, social, economic, and scientific needs and demands, with the attempts of man to measure the natural phenomena and his interest in measuring everything around him according to his daily needs, whereas the point that this science was a necessity in every civilized nation. From this point of view, it is clear that the science of measurement is connected to the various sciences that overlapped with it until they were integrated with it, such as material sciences, life sciences, and other applied sciences, in addition to its distinctive impact on many of the human sciences.

This study is an attempt to find out the emergence of this science and its scientific classification among scientific thinkers throughout the Islamic eras, the impact of Muslim scholars in developing its means and methods, and the development that can be recorded in its mathematical applications in the applied sciences of Islamic civilization, especially in its stages of maturity in the Middle Islamic era extending from the 6-8th Hijri /12-14th Gregorian century.
