Abstract
This paper is devoted to study Tammam Hassan’s perspective of the principle of referring the branch to the origin in adding some contributions to the traditional perceptions. Although, generally, he is not far away from the traditional grammarians’ main stream, he is pioneering in specifying the concept of referring the branch to the origin only in the sense of interpretation as a Quranic connotation. His concept is varied as tackling the levels of phoneme, word, sentence, and rule. Based on these four notions, the paper is evolving to identify Hassan’s application of these concepts with exemplification.
The important results of this study are: The traditional Arab Linguists have not clearly identified the concept of referring the branch to the origin in their references except in studying some Arabic issues sporadically. Hassan agrees with them in terms of the perspective and contradicts them in the concept itself in terms of some of its types and applications. This is obviously illustrated in referring to this concept at the grapheme-phoneme level.
